The Royal Challengers Bangalore have shelled out INR 10.75 crore each to sign their former players Harshal Patel and Wanindu Hasaranga at the IPL 2022 Auction. Fans should note that RCB paid less than 1 crore total to both Harshal and Hasaranga. However, because of their brilliant performances in T20 cricket, RCB had to pay more for them.
Some fans on Twitter have pointed out that the Royal Challengers Bangalore could have retained one of the two players for lesser funds. The retention rules of the IPL 2022 Mega Auction state that if a franchise retains four players, then they will lose INR 42 crore from their purse of INR 90 crore. They will enter the mega auction with INR 48 crore in the purse.
The Chennai Super Kings and the Mumbai Indians used all spots, but the Royal Challengers Bangalore decided to retain only three players, namely Virat Kohli, Mohammed Siraj and Glenn Maxwell. So, the amount that was deducted from their purse was INR 33 crore.
Had they retained either Harshal Patel or Wanindu Hasaranga, they would have lost INR 9 crore more from their purse, meaning they could have saved INR 1.75 crore. Some fans may think Harshal would have asked for his release. However, the fast bowler clarified that Mike Hesson told him that the franchise did not retain him because of purse management.
“When I was not retained, Mike Hesson called me and said, that it was mainly purse management,” Harshal said.
How fans on Twitter reacted to RCB’s decision to sign Harshal Patel for INR 10.75 crore
