“There is no pressure on India to win an ICC tournament,” Rahul Dravid plays down 10-year ICC trophy drought before WTC final

Rahul Dravid, the head coach of the Indian cricket team, has denied that there is any extra pressure on India to win ICC tournaments, because they haven’t won any ICC tournament for the last decade or so.

The last ICC tournament that the Indian cricket team had won was the Champions Trophy in England in 2013 under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. It’s not that India hasn’t performed well in the ICC tournaments in the meantime. They have reached several knockouts, but they have not won a global international trophy since 2013.

They have the opportunity to do it again in the final of the World Test Championship (WTC) which is starting from 7th of June at the Oval where India is facing Australia. Rahul Dravid was addressing the press conference a couple of days ahead of that game and when he was asked if the Indian players are feeling any extra pressure as they haven’t won an ICC tournament in a long time, Dravid said no.

According to Dravid, it would be nice if India wins an ICC tournament because every team in the world wants to win ICC tournaments, but just because India hasn’t won one in the last few years doesn’t mean that they haven’t played consistent cricket.

Dravid insisted that India has not only beaten Australia twice in Australia’s own backyard in the last few years, they also drew a test series in England last year, which is no mean achievement.

The head coach also welcomed some of the experienced players back in the Indian squad, particularly Ajinkya Rahane who has made his comeback into the test squad on the back of a great domestic season and a very fruitful IPL.

Dravid said that the fact that Rahane has been a proven performer in the overseas conditions and has been a leader as well, his presence in the squad will definitely help India.
