“Cameron Green reminds me of Andrew Flintoff,” Michael Vaughan offers high praise to young Aussie allrounder

Cameron Green dismissed England's captain Joe Root and vice captain Ben Stokes today

Offering a big compliment to the Australian allrounder Cameron Green, the former England captain Michael Vaughan has said that Green reminds him of the young version of Andrew Flintoff, the former legendary England allrounder who played a key role in England’s famous Ashes triumph in 2005.

Cameron Green, since the time he has made his debut in test match cricket, hasn’t really set the stage ablaze with the bat, despite being rated highly in the Australian cricket circles, and he actually seemed to be struggling with the ball as well in his debut series against India.

But, in the ongoing Ashes against England, Green has looked very, very impressed with the ball so far. The England skipper Joe Root, who hasn’t really had any trouble against most of the Australian frontline bowlers in the series, has struggled against Green big time and has lost his wicket twice to him after being well set.

Joe Root was all set for a big knock when Cameron Green induced an outside edge off him

Root stitched a hundred run partnership with Dawid Malan for the third wicket in the afternoon session today and after the dinner break, it seemed he was all set for a big one, but the Australian stand-in skipper Steve Smith brought Green on for a short spell and while Smith perhaps wanted a bit of control from Green, the young allrounder actually fetched him the all-important wicket of Root.

Root’s dismissal to Green was pretty much in the same manner as it was in the Brisbane test match, as he looked uncertain getting onto the front foot and was eventually stuck on the crease to edge one behind the stumps, this time to Steve Smith in the first slip. It’s probably the high release point of Cameron Green that is causing the tentativeness to Joe Root’s foot movement.

After getting Root out, Green later dismissed England’s vice-captain, Ben Stokes, as well, but it was a bit of a lucky scalp, as Stokes just played one onto his stumps, looking for a boundary towards the end of the innings.

The reason why Michael Vaughan sees a resemblance between Green and Flintoff is that Flintoff was a very tall bowler as well and like Green, he also used to hit the deck hard from a high release point, making it difficult for the batsman to have an assured movement onto the front foot. However, Flintoff was probably a couple of yards quicker than Green.

I write a bit on cricket and I am more interested in technical and tactical side of the game, rather than bravado.
