“People talk about Dhoni’s winning six, my 97 in that game, but it was Zaheer who set the tone for the World Cup Final,” says Gautam Gambhir
Indian Cricket Team scripted history when 2011 clinched the World Cup title for the second time. MS Dhoni-led Team India defeated Sri Lanka by 6 wickets at the iconic Wankhade Stadium in Mumbai. On account of Mahela Jayawardene’s unbeaten 103 from 88 balls Sri Lanka posted a total of 274-6 in their quota of 50 overs.
In reply to Sri Lanka’s total of 274, Indian openers Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag fell early to Lasith Malinga and give Indians a mini heart attack.
However, after that Gautam Gambhir (97) joined hands with Virat Kohli (35) and stitched a gritty 83-run stand to lay the foundation for India’s chase. After Kohli’s dismissal skipper MS Dhoni (91*) joined Gautam Gambhir and the duo together notched a 109-run stand between them.
With just only 5 runs needed in the 49th over, Indian skipper MS Dhoni dispatched the ball over long-on for six and ended a 28-year-old wait to bring the World Cup home.
While everyone keeps bragging about Dhoni’s six and Gambhir’s 97, Zaheer Khan was the hidden hero for his side. The left-arm pacer bowled staggering well as he drew the first blood for his side and took two wickets in the game. He also was the joint leading wicket-taker with 21 scalps to his name.
Gautam Gambhir also credited Zaheer for his heroics. Speaking on Star Sports, he said: “People talk about MS Dhoni’s winning six, my 97 in that game, but it was Zaheer Khan who set the tone for the World Cup Final”.
