Asia Cup 2022 Super 4: How it’s different from usual Semi Final?

Asia Cup 2022 is happening at the moment. India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Hong Kong are the teams involved in the competition. While the group stage forms the first part of the tournament, the Super Four forms the next stage before the final. The idea of Super 4 is a little different from the usual semi-finals. Here, we take a look at the way in which the Asia Cup 2022 Super 4 is different from the usual semi final.

Super Four will form the core of the event

Six teams are divided into two groups of three teams each. The top two teams of this stage qualify for the Super 4. In the ongoing Asia Cup, while India, Pakistan and Hong Kong are in Group A, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan are in Group B.

In the Super Four stage, all four teams will play against each other once. A points table is populated and at the end, the top two teams on this chart will play in the final of the competition.

Asia Cup 2022 Super 4 is different from a semi final

The format of Super Four is different from the regular semi-finals or the format in IPL. When it comes to the semi-final, the top four teams will be involved in two semi-final encounters. The winners of these games will reach the finals of the competition. The 2021 T20 World Cup or for that matter, most of the ICC events follow this format.

In the IPL and some of the other T20 leagues, the qualifier and the eliminator format is used. In this case, the top two teams are given an extra chance to reach the final. For a comparatively shorter tournament like the Asia Cup, the Super Four is the ideal format. This way, all the teams are given a fair chance of three matches to show their skills and form.
