On Monday, BCCI announced that Viacom 18 has purchased the media rights for the Women’s IPL. This contract will stand for five years. The media giant has committed INR 951 Cr to procure the rights. Here, we take a look at how Twitter reacted as Women’s IPL media rights get sold for a massive amount to Viacom18.
Women’s IPL fetches a massive amount for the media rights
The Men’s IPL started in 2008. It was a success from the first edition itself. Right now, though, there are very few leagues that match the stature of IPL in both entertainment and commercial aspects. At least, in the game of cricket, there is no competitor for the IPL right now.
However, although the other boards started the women’s version of the T20 league, BCCI was lagging behind. A few months ago, though, BCCI confirmed that the plans to have WIPL are materialized. The first edition of the competition will happen in 2023. A few days ago, BCCI even announced the tender for interested parties to own a franchise in this league. Top Men’s IPL teams such as Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians have already expressed their interest.
Twitter reacts to the development
The Indian Women’s Team has actually been doing well in recent years. However, when it comes to pressure situations, the team seems to lack the skills to tackle that. They need to play more and the depth of the resources must also increase. For all this to happen, it was necessary to have an IPL-style tournament. IPL has helped men’s cricket a lot and is expected to do the same for the women’s game, too. There had been doubts regarding the commercial feasibility of the tournament. However, with the latest announcement by BCCI, even those doubts have been put to rest. On that note, here is how Twitter reacted to the news:
