The India-Sri Lanka series is coming up soon. With the IPL suspended indefinitely, this series will bring back the flavour of cricket that the fans have sorely missed after the tournament’s suspension. Sourav Ganguly recently announced that the team travelling to Sri Lanka would be a completely new one. Thus, this has brought up speculation about who is going to feature in the team. Many uncapped players are going to get their first chance to represent India, and they would be raring to prove themselves on cricket’s international scene. Here are 5 uncapped players from India who could debut in the series against Sri Lanka.
#1. Devdutt Padikkal
Devdutt Padikkal is one of the most talented batsmen in the next generation of Indian players. The Karnataka batsman has been scoring runs with great ease in the IPL. Padikkal, alongside Indian skipper Virat Kohli have become a ray of hope for the RCB this season. He had already made a great first impression when he made his IPL debut. In his debut IPL season last year, he scored 473 runs at a strike rate of 124.80, and an average of 31.53. The talented batsman deserves to be selected for the international team. His first-class cricket statistics are great and has an incredible average of 86.68 in List A cricket too. A call-up to the international scene is due for the cricketer, and there’s no doubt he will make the most of it.
#2. Rahul Tewatia
Rahul Tewatia is someone who has made waves since his match-winning knock for Rajasthan Royals in the 2020 season of the IPL.
Tewatia is a bowling all-rounder and has decent records in domestic cricket. He has also been in the spotlight in the IPL. If there was ever a chance of him making it to the Indian team, this is one of his biggest ones. Tewatia has been clicking into place everywhere, and an international call-up seems imminent
#3. Harshal Patel
Harshal Patel burst into prominence with his death bowling skills against the Mumbai Indians. His figures of 5/27 made him a bowling mainstay in the RCB franchise. He has been playing cricket for a long time and has been in the T20 circuit since 2012. Patel is a very talented allrounder, and captains the Haryana team in domestic cricket. Patel has 226 wickets from 64 matches in first-class cricket. Although he got his big break a bit late, he can be a good addition to the team in the future.
#4. Kartik Tyagi
Kartik Tyagi made headlines internationally with his clinical bowling performances in the U-19 World Cup in 2020. He picked 11 wickets at an average of 13.90 with an economy rate of 3.45. Tyagi was selected as a reserve pacer for India’s tour of Australia. He is one of the brightest talents in the pool of uncapped players from India. He was also compared to the legendary Brett Lee for his bowling action and has generally been a great prospect for the future. Tyagi has shown great composure under pressure and would be a great fit for the team.
#5. Varun Chakravarthy
Varun Chakravarthy is someone who has been on the cusp of being selected in the Indian team for a long time now. Untimely injuries and repeated fitness test failures have kept him away from his shot at international cricket. However, his performances in the IPL have been a highlight of his career. Chakravarthy plays for the Kolkata Knight Riders and has been highly successful this season. His statistics in List A cricket and T20 cricket are phenomenal, and should surely get him picked for the team. Here’s hoping that his fitness levels are up to the standards after recovering from COVID-19.
