Andre Russell put showed up with tremendous bowling figures in the exciting MI vs KKR match yesterday. Bowling against the formidable Mumbai batting lineup, Russel took 5 wickets in just 2 overs. While KKR went on to lose the match, Russel’s performance was a great highlight of the contest.
Not many bowlers have been able to dominate the deep batting line-up of MI like Russel did yesterday. Thus, today we will take a look at the 5 best bowling figures against the Mumbai Indians in the IPL.
5. Sohail Tanvir (Figures: 4-14, 4 overs)
Sohail Tanvir played for Rajasthan Royals in the 2008 season of the IPL when he dismantled Mumbai Indians at Jaipur. He took 4 wickets, giving off just 14 runs from four overs. He had a measly econ rating og of just 3.5. This Mumbai batting lineup consisted of big names like Sachin Tendulkar, Sourabh Tiwary, Robin Uthappa, etc.
MI got restricted to just 145/7. Rajasthan Royals won that match comfortably with 5 wickets to spare, and Sohail Tanvir was rightly adjudged the ‘Man of the Match’. Tanvir also played for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL.
4. Samuel Badree (Figures: 4-9 in 4 overs)
Samuel Badree is a Trinidadian leg-break bowler, who dismantled Mumbai Indians in April 2017 in Bengaluru. Playing for the Royal Challengers Bangalore, Badree exhibited a clinical performance with the ball, picking 4 scalps for just 9 runs. Chasing an easy target of 143, the Mumbai Indians were looking for an easy win.
However, Badree decided to do his best to win the game for his side, bowling with an economy rating of only 2.25. In an IPL game, such figures are exemplary. But it was not to be for the RCB, as Pollard’s exploits with the bat won MI the game with four wickets to spare.
2. Rohit Sharma (Stats: 4-6 in 2 overs)
Yes, you read that right! This is the same Rohit Sharma who has now become synonymous with Mumbai Indians and has led the team to the most number of IPL trophies in history. Ironically, Sharma has the third-best bowling performance against the Mumbai Indians.
Rohit top-scored for Deccan Chargers with 38 runs and took 4 important wickets for just 6 runs. But these four wickets weren’t ordinary wickets. Three of those four came off a hat-trick. It is hilarious in hindsight since Sharma has reduced bowling significantly and focuses more on his batting prowess. Mumbai Indians were thoroughly outplayed and finished at 126/8. They fell short by 19 runs, all thanks to a tremendous bowling performance by the Deccan Chargers.
1. Harshal Patel (Stats: 5-27 in 4 overs)
Mumbai Indians has had a bad record this season it seems, with the top two bowling figures against them scored in two consecutive matches. Bowling for the Royal Challengers Bangalore, Harshal Patel persevered under the Mumbai Indians onslaught and scalped away most of the tail end of the champion franchise. He bowled the final over, which saw a total of four wickets falling in the span of five balls. Patel’s 5 wicket haul restricted Mumbai to a relatively low 159.
RCB bungled a relatively easy run chase but won the match after some tense moments. Harshal Patel was undoubtedly the find of the tournament, as he wrapped up the very competent lower order of the Mumbai Indians and won the match for his team.
5. Andre Russell (Stats: 5-15 in 2 overs)
As discussed above, Russell made Mumbai Indians sweat while batting first, sending half the team back to the dressing room in just two overs. Mumbai were bowled out for just 152, and Russell registered his career-best figures of 5-15-2. Kolkata Knight Riders made a mess of an easy run chase and managed to make only 142 runs at the end of 20 overs. Their collapse was due to another talented bowler, Rahul Chahar, who took 4 wickets himself.
