The IPL auction for the 2021 season took place and franchises have spent a lot of money on a number of overseas players. Once again fast bowlers were in demand as they have bagged huge money through this auction. Franchises like Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bangalore who had huge purses have spent more than 10 CR on some players in this IPL Auction.
There are a few records that have been created as some players are the highest paid in the history of IPL Auctions. So, on that note, let’s have a look at the six most expensive players in the history of the IPL Auction.
1. Chris Morris – 16.25 CR
Chris Morris became the highest-paid player in the history of the auction as Rajasthan Royals bought him for a whopping 16.25 CR in the 2021 IPL Auction.
Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore were in a bidding war for the South African pacer but in the end, Rajasthan Royals entered the fray and won the war as they broke the bank to get Morris for 16.25 CR. No other player has got that much money in any IPL Auction.
2. Yuvraj Singh – 16 CR
Yuvraj Singh who had also got 14 CR in the 2014 IPL Auction went past his own price in the 2015 IPL Auction as Delhi Capitals bought him for 16 CR.
RCB and DC were in a bidding war, but Delhi Capitals won it as they spent 16 CR for the Indian star player. Yuvraj Singh didn’t have a great season in 2015, and they released him before the next IPL season.
3. Pat Cummins – 15.5 CR
The Australian pacer Pat Cummins who is the No.1 test bowler was the most expensive overseas player in the history of the IPL in 2020 before Morris got more than him. Cummins who was the main attraction in the 2020 IPL Auction got a price of 15.5 CR from Kolkata Knight Riders.
Many teams were interested in Pat Cummins but Kolkata Knight Riders jumped in quite late and in the end got the player they wanted. Cummins had a decent season in IPL 2020 but still, KKR has retained him for the next IPL season.
4. Kyle Jamieson – 15 CR
The New Zealand quick who has had a dream start to his Test career had registered his name in the IPL Auction. There was a lot of talk about Kyle Jamieson ahead of the Auction but he is fairly untested in the shortest format. Jamieson who had played only 4 T20Is for New Zealand got 15 CR in this IPL Auction.
Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore weren’t ready to leave him as the bidding went on till 15 CR. Finally, Punjab Kings stopped the bidding and RCB got him for 15 CR. This is the highest bid for a player who hasn’t even played in the IPL.
5. Ben Stokes – 14.5 CR
Ben Stokes had registered for the IPL Auction in 2017 for the first time and he was the talk of the town before the auction. A couple of teams started the bidding war and the price went over 10 CR. Suddenly Rising Pune Supergiant who had a small purse came in and bagged the England all-rounder for 14.5 CR.
Ben Stokes was worth all that money as he won the Most Valuable Player Award in IPL 2017 and was instrumental in helping his team reach the Final. Next year, Stokes again bagged more than 12 CR in the Mega Auction.
6. Glenn Maxwell – 14.25 CR
Glenn Maxwell who had a disastrous IPL in 2020 got more money than he got in the last season. Punjab Kings had bought him for 10.75 CR in IPL 2020 and he couldn’t even hit a single six throughout the IPL.
Maxwell performed well in the India-Australia series which helped him fetch a price of 14.25 CR in this auction. Royal Challengers Bangalore won the bidding war with Chennai Super Kings as they bought him for 14.25 CR. All the RCB fans would be able to see Virat Kohli, AB De Villiers, and Glenn Maxwell in the same team.
