When it comes to the overseas contingent in IPL, the Australians dominate. Be it on the field or in the backroom staff, they are dominant. Almost every franchise has had an Aussie Head Coach at some point in their team history. On that note, here, we take a look at the list of two IPL franchises that never had an Australian Head Coach.
Note: This list is as of the end of IPL 2024. Also, CSK were coached by Kepler Wessels in IPL 2008. He is a South African-Australian cricketer. Hence, CSK is not considered for this list.
1) Rising Pune Supergiant (the franchise does not exist now)
Rising Pune Supergiant is one of the IPL franchises that never had an Australian Head Coach. The franchise played in IPL 2016 and IPL 2017. While they had a good run in IPL 2017, they could not do well in IPL 2016. Stephen Fleming was the Head Coach for this side in both the editions.
Stephen Fleming has also been the Head Coach of CSK for a while, except for the first season. On the other hand, RPS’ owners now own a franchise called Lucknow Super Giants in IPL. They have Justin Langer at the helm as the Head Coach. He replaced Andy Flower before IPL 2024.
2) Gujarat Titans
It has only been three seasons so far. However, Gujarat Titans have not had a change in coach till now. Ashish Nehra has been at the helm. He led them to the title in IPL 2022 while the squad reached the finals in IPL 2023. However, they could not do well in IPL 2024.
There are reports that Ashish Nehra will leave GT before IPL 2025. A few reports even suggest that Ashish Nehra could take over the reins at Delhi Capitals, a place made vacant by Ricky Ponting, who is now the Head Coach of Punjab Kings.
