Jos Buttler failed as a captain in the 2023 ODI World Cup. He is also struggling in the 2024 T20 World Cup. It will be interesting to see the route that the management will take if England has an early exit from the tournament. On that note, here, we take a look at the list of three players England must groom as the next white-ball captain.
1) Sam Curran
Sam Curran will somehow get his place back in the playing XI in the future. The balance that he adds to the playing XI is immense. Hence, there is no major worry about his playing time.
Considering his age and the experience as a captain that he has got, especially in the IPL, Sam is an ideal successor for Buttler. Yes, he still lacks experience as a player but compared to the other options, Sam appears better now.
2) Harry Brook
Harry Brook is one of the players England must groom as the next white-ball captain. He is the future of the batting line-up for England in all the formats. Therefore, he should be an ideal choice in the race to take up captaincy in the future.
The ECB might, as well, give him the responsibility right away. In view of the 2027 ODI World Cup, it is better that Brook gets a chance now so that he can prepare for the job in the future.
3) Ben Duckett
Ben Duckett is an under-rated choice for the captaincy choice. He has the age to serve the team for quite a few years from now.
The position in the team is a guarantee, considering he adds value as a left-handed middle-order batter in the white-ball formats. Plus, he can keep wickets and therefore, he would bring in a lot more variety and option to the side. Hence, he is on the list.
