When England came to India in 2016, it was a memorable series in many ways. Karun Nair scored a triple-century, KL Rahul made 199 runs and India also saw the talent of Jayant Yadav. Interestingly, there were some other members in the squad whom not many would have noticed. On that note, here, we take a look at three Indians who were surprisingly in the Test squad when England toured India in 2016.
1) Manish Pandey
One player who did not get a chance in Tests is Manish Pandey. Despite doing well for a long time in the Ranji Trophy, the coveted chance never came his way. For the last few Tests of this series, when Ajinkya Rahane had injured himself, Manish Pandey was added as a cover.
It was Karun Nair who made the best use of the chance, though. However, even Karun was not able to cement his place in the side later.
2) Parthiv Patel
Parthiv Patel was the go-to option for India when it came to a wicket-keeper crisis for Team India. After MS Dhoni’s departure, it was Wriddhiman Saha who was preferred behind the stumps.
However, as his backup, India tried many options. They also selected Parthiv Patel, who had actually been doing well domestically back then. He also toured South Africa in another one of his comebacks.
3) Amit Mishra
Amit Mishra is one of the Indians who were surprisingly in the Test squad when England toured India in 2016. After the retirement of Anil Kumble, India struggled to find a good replacement for him. Even now, India does not have a good right-arm leg-spinner in Tests.
Amit Mishra was one player who was tried for some time. While he did well in a few games, he was a bit inconsistent. Later, he was dropped and India stuck with the likes of R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. Karn Sharma was also a leggie whom India tried after Kumble.
