Playing against his home franchise in the 2013 edition of the IPL, Virat Kohli played a magnificent inning of 99 runs. The right-handed batsman was leading the Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
The home team won the toss and invited RCB to have a bat first. Unfortunately, the visitors lost their opening batsmen, Cheteshwar Pujara and Chris Gayle with just 32 runs on the board. Kohli then joined hands with Moises Henriques and AB de Villiers to take his team to a respectable total.
The Delhite smashed 99 runs off 58 deliveries, including ten fours and four maximums. Unfortunately, he got run out on 99. Jaydev Unadkat picked up a five-wicket haul in the second innings to set up a four-runs win for the Bangalore-based franchise.
Ishan Kishan – 99 vs. Royal Challengers Bangalore, IPL 2020
Upcoming Indian wicket-keeper batsman Ishan Kishan became the Mumbai Indians batsman in IPL history to lose his wicket for 99 runs. The southpaw came out to bat at number four against the Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2020.
Chasing a target of 202 runs, the Mumbai Indians made a slow start, but Kishan soaked in the pressure and then launched an all out assault on RCB along with Kieron Pollard. The duo added 119 runs for the fifth wicket before Kishan played an aggressive shot and handed over a catch to Devdutt Padikkal.
The left-handed batsman smacked two fours and nine sixes to ensure that his team manages to tie the match.
Prithvi Shaw – 99 vs. Kolkata Knight Riders, IPL 2019
Another incident when a batsman got out for 99 and then the match ended in a tie was during the IPL 2019 fixture between the Delhi Capitals and the Kolkata Knight Riders. KKR posted 185/8 batting first at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
Prithvi Shaw got DC off to a flier with a 55-ball 99. He smacked 12 boundaries and three sixes in his whirlwind knock. Unfortunately, he came under pressure while batting on 99. He gifted a simple catch to Dinesh Karthik off Lockie Ferguson’s bowling and returned to the pavilion.
DC were in a comfortable position to win the match, but KKR came back in the contest and restricted DC to 185/6. Still, DC won the Super Over and ensured that Prithvi’s effort did not go in vain.
Chris Gayle – 99 vs. Rajasthan Royals, IPL 2020
The only foreign player in IPL history to get out on 99 is the Universe Boss Chris Gayle. The left-handed batsman from Jamaica achieved this feat recently against the Rajasthan Royals. Gayle batted at number 3 for KXIP and scored 99 runs off just 63 deliveries.
He had a brilliant strike rate of 157.14 in an inning, where he hit six fours and eight sixes. Unfortunately, Gayle lost his wicket to Jofra Archer when he was just a run away from completing another IPL century.
With this, Gayle became the first batsman to remain not out on 99 and get out for 99 in an IPL match!
