Surprising things could happen in the game of cricket. A team could prepare for a big tournament for a long time but they might be forced to go away from these plans at the last minute. This is all set to happen before the upcoming ODI World Cup, as well. Here, we take a look at two players who have not played a single ODI since the 2019 World Cup but might play in the 2023 ODI World Cup.
1) Faf du Plessis – South Africa
It has been a while since Faf du Plessis has donned the South African jersey. He is a quality cricketer and it is unfortunate that he is not getting chances with the Proteas.
However, going by his current form, it would be South Africa’s loss if Faf is not given a chance. In IPL 2023, he was the highest run-getter and looked really comfortable on the Indian pitches. Since ODI WC will happen in India, he can be a vital option. The likes of Janneman Malan have not played too much in India and hence, Faf seems to be a better bet.
2) Nathan Lyon – Australia
Nathan Lyon is one of the players who have not played a single ODI since the 2019 World Cup but might play in the 2023 ODI World Cup. Australia currently uses Adam Zampa as the lead spinner while Ashton Agar and Glenn Maxwell support the leggie.
Considering Australia will reportedly play a few games in Chennai, it makes sense to have another spinner. A player like Nathan Lyon, the right-arm offie, might just be the right fit. He has the experience to make it work on the pitches that suit his style. Australia has good pace bowling all-rounders such as Cameron Green and Marcus Stoinis to make a place for Lyon in the playing XI for the Aussies.
