“That was the planning I was doing,” Rohit Sharma reveals what was the first thing he thought about after getting sold to Deccan Chargers in the IPL 2008 auction

Rohit Sharma is the most successful IPL skipper.

India and Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma has revealed what was the first thing he thought about after getting sold to Deccan Chargers in the IPL 2008 auction. He said that since he was just 20 years old, he didn’t know what to do with this much of money so he thought about which car should he buy.

“Thought about which car should I buy,” Rohit Sharma after getting sold to Deccan Charges in the inaugural edition of the IPL

The journey of Rohit Sharma started with the now-defunct Deccan Chargers in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The right-hander was brought by the franchise for $750,000 at the inaugural Indian Premier League (IPL) auction in 2008. He played for two years with the team and also won the title in 2009. Apart from his vital contributions with the bat, he also took a hat trick for the team.

After that, he was acquired by Mumbai Indians for $2 million at the 2011 IPL auction. The batter was then handed the leadership in 2013 and since then he hasn’t looked back and made the team the most successful franchise in the league.

He led Mumbai Indians to the title record five times, winning in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. Apart from these, the batter has guided the team to the two champions league title as well. Not only with the captaincy but he has led from the front as well as has scored truckloads of runs for the side and is among the leading run-scorer in the league.

Rohit has now revealed what he thought of getting when he was picked by the Deccan Chargers in the IPL 2008 auction. Speaking on Star Sports’ IPL 2023 preview show called ‘Stars on Star’, he said:

“Firstly, I didn’t even know how much $750,000 is. A thing like the auction had never happened for us before and nobody even heard of it. My number came very late in the auction, probably after one and half hour.

“After I was sold, I was told that I was getting $750,000, I think it was 3 to 3.5 crore. But I was really happy and thought about which car should I buy. That was the planning I was doing! I was only 20 years old at that time.”

Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians will open their captain against Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2023

Rohit will captain the team in this year’s IPL as well. After a dismal outing in the last season, where MI ended last on the points table, the opening batter would want to turn the tables around and guide his team to the 6th title.

The IPL 2023 will kick start from 31st March and the Mumbai Indians will open their campaign against Royal Challengers Bangalore at Chinnaswamy Stadium on April 2.
