“He will be my new T20I captain”, Ricky Ponting picks his new Australian T20I team captain

Australia had a horrible run in the 2022 T20 World Cup. The defending champions were deemed to be the favourites of the tournament for two reasons. Firstly, they performed brilliantly last year in the previous edition of the same competition and secondly, the T20 World Cup is being played on their home turf this year. The trophy was theirs to be taken but their big defeat against neighbours New Zealand in the very first match unnerved them totally and they could never get their momentum back.

Ahead of the tournament, Australian captain Aaron Finch had announced his retirement from ODI cricket. Many had thought that he would retire form T20Is as well and thus the big question was who will be their new captain. However, it was later revealed that the decision was only for ODI and Finch will continue as their T20I captain. But their recent performance in T20 World Cup has led to many celebrities and fans questioning Finch’s captaincy and it is being said that he might be replaced from his position. That could also ultimately lead to be Aaron Finch being removed from Australia’s squad totally as his performances have not been that great in the last few years.

Amid these conversations, former Indian captain Ricky Ponting has said that he backs Glen Maxwell to become Australia’s next T20I captain according to famous news outlet Daily Mail.

Glen Maxwell is one of the veterans in the current Australia side and he is also one of their most important players in T20Is. However, his form in the recent past has been questionable as well. Especially in T20 World Cup 2022, he did not have a single performance worth remembering and thus many might think that Australia will make the same mistake that they did with Aaron Finch is they elect Maxwell as their new captain.

Mitchell Starc is another contender for the captaincy. However, nothing is concrete yet and more updates will be made available soon.
