Virat Kohli recalls the crucial advice MS Dhoni gave him at the start of his career

Virat Kohli now wants Rishabh Pant to apply Dhoni's advice on himself

The Indian test captain Virat Kohli has recalled a crucial piece of advice that he got from his first international captain MS Dhoni right at the start of his career. Kohli was addressing the pre match press conference ahead of the Cape Town test earlier today when he was asked about the shot selection of the young wicketkeeper batsman Rishabh Pant.

According to Kohli, whenever a batsman plays a rash shot, before anyone else, the batsman himself knows that he has made a mistake. Now it’s up to the batsman to avoid making the same mistake again and again frequently.

Virat Kohli said when he was a young player, MS Dhoni told him that whenever a mistake is made, the player should ensure that he doesn’t make the same mistake for at least 7-8 months. Only then can the player have a long career at the international level, because if the same mistakes are made frequently, the player can be found out by the opposition very, very quickly.

Kohli thinks the same advice applies to Pant or any young player who might have made a mistake or might have played a bad shot at some point. The coach or the captain can have a conversation with the player, but ultimately it comes down to the player himself to not commit similar mistakes again and again.

I would have done things differently from KL Rahul: Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli had missed the last test match and it was KL Rahul who had led India in Kohli’s absence. Not everyone was particularly impressed with KL’s captaincy in the game, but Kohli stressed that KL did well and did his best to dismiss the opposition in the fourth innings, however the opposition played well and blunted the Indian attack.

Kohli admitted that he might have done a few things differently if he was captaining India in the last test, but he also said that every captain has his own way of doing things. Kohli confirmed that the back spasm that he had suffered has healed and he is at his 100% fitness for the test match starting tomorrow. The 33-year old, however, revealed the unavailability of the right arm seamer Mohammed Siraj who had injured his hamstring during the last test match.

Kohli said that Siraj’s situation has improved and is gradually improving further, but he is not match fit yet and can’t be picked for the next test.

I write a bit on cricket and I am more interested in technical and tactical side of the game, rather than bravado.
