Australia defeated New Zealand by eight wickets to win the 2021 edition of the T20 World Cup. It was the first time that the country won the tournament. For a team that has been dominant in world cricket, it was one trophy that was eluding them. Hence, Twitter erupted as soon as the team added the trophy to its collection. In this article, we take a look at how Twitter reacted after Australia won its first T20 World Cup by defeating New Zealand.
Australia won its first T20 World Cup
Winning the toss, Australia put New Zealand to bat first. The bowlers started well and took the wicket of Daryl Mitchell early. They also managed to keep Kane Williamson and Martin Guptill quiet for a while. However, after the Kiwi skipper got going, the Aussie bowlers found it hard. They eventually restricted the Kiwis to 172-4.
With the bat, the Aussies faced an early jolt as Aaron Finch got out. However, Mitchell Marsh and David Warner steadied the ship and took the team to a winning position. While David Warner got a fifty, Marsh hit 77 runs from 50 balls to become the Man of the Match. Glenn Maxwell came in and applied the finishing touches to take the team over the line.
Twitter erupts after a vintage Australia performance
Unlike the earlier era, the Australian team has not been dominant in recent years. Hence, before the tournament started, not many expected the Aussies to do well. However, against the odds, the men in yellow managed to put in a team effort to win the trophy. While the bowlers were great throughout the competition, all members of the batting unit contributed in one game or another. Below, we take a look at a few Twitter reactions to Australia winning an ICC event after a long time.
