The outgoing Indian coach Ravi Shastri, in an inspirational speech to the Indian players after the game against Namibia last night, told them that they can be extremely proud of what they achieved as a unit in the last 5-6 years and they will go down as one of the great teams, not just in the history of Indian cricket, but in the history of the game itself.
Ravi Shastri signed off as the Indian coach with the game against Namibia and although his last assignment, which was the T20 World Cup 2021 campaign of India, didn’t turn out a successful one, he coached India to some memorable triumphs during his stint.
Shastri was the first coach under whom India won a test series in Australia, and they didn’t just do it once, they did it twice on the bounce and the second time when India beat Australia in Australia, most of their first choice players weren’t even available.
India then went to England and was leading the 5-match test series 2-1 as well, but the series couldn’t get completed because of COVID cases. While the overseas accomplishments in test match cricket were the biggest highlight of Shastri’s coaching career, what also must be noted that India never lost a home test series under Shastri either.
Indian couldn’t win an ICC tournament under Ravi Shastri’s coaching
The only regret that Shastri might have had as a coach is that India didn’t win an ICC trophy under him. Shastri, however, in his last address to the players, told them that they will get another chance to have a crack at the ICC trophy, but what they have achieved, particularly in COVID times in the last couple of years, it makes them a truly great unit.
