Scoring a double century in Test cricket is a huge achievement in itself, but to score double hundreds both home and away speaks volumes about your abilities as a Test batsman. There are quite a few Indian batsmen who have managed to go past the score of 200 while playing home as well as away Test matches. Here are 5 of them –
#1 Rahul Dravid
Rahul Dravid is the only Indian batsman who has scored double hundreds both in England and Australia. The former Indian captain has as many as 5 double hundreds to his name out of which two were scored at home, while three were scored overseas. Apart from England and Australia, Dravid also scored a double hundred in Pakistan.
Dravid was one of those players who always liked to spend a lot of time on the wicket, right since the start of his career and him scoring big double hundreds in Test match cricket was not quite a surprise for anyone. He was tailor-made to play those kinds of innings.
#2 Virender Sehwag
Virender Sehwag has not just scored double hundreds home and away, he has scored triple hundreds home and away. Sehwag scored 309 runs while playing a Test match against Pakistan in Multan and then a few years later, he replicated it while facing the Sri Lankan bowling attack at home as he smashed another triple hundred in Test match cricket.
Sehwag was a totally different player to Dravid and he never batted quite the length of time that Dravid batted, but he scored his runs at such a good clip that even if he batted for 300 balls in an innings, he would always get close to the score of 250.
#3 Sachin Tendulkar
It’s not possible for Sachin Tendulkar’s name to not feature in a list of batting records in Test match cricket. The master blaster would always be there somewhere in the list and he features in this list as well, as he also scored double hundreds home and away.
While Sachin scored a total of 6 double hundreds in Test match cricket, two of his best double hundreds came in Ahmedabad and Sydney playing against very competent bowling attacks of New Zealand and Australia respectively.
#4 Virat Kohli
Virat Kohli has scored 7 double hundreds which is the most number of double hundreds scored by any batsman for Indian ever. But, out of his 7 double hundreds, Virat has scored 6 of them at home and only one of his double hundreds has come overseas.
The opposition against which Virat has scored a double hundred in an away Test is West Indies. The current Indian captain did it a couple of years back, playing at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua.
#5 Wasim Jaffer
This is a surprising name because Wasim Jaffer didn’t play Test cricket for India for a long period of time. However, in the limited opportunities that Jaffer got, he managed to enter this elite club of players who have scored double tons in both home and away.
While Jaffer scored his first double century against Pakistan in Kolkata, he did it again on the tour of West Indies in 2002 when the Indian cricket team played a Test match at St. John’s.
