After being postponed last year, World T20 will now happen in 2021. The event would start on 17th October and would be held in the UAE and Oman. For Team India, the upcoming competition will be massive. It will be a realistic chance to end the ICC trophyless barren run. One of the main reasons to arrange the Sri Lanka Tour was to audition players for the World T20. In this article, we take a look at five Indian players from SL Tour who might get into the World T20 squad. We talk about only the newbies and not establishes cricketers like Shikhar Dhawan and Hardik Pandya who are certain to be on the flight to the UAE.
1) Suryakumar Yadav
Suryakumar Yadav is fairly new to international cricket. He had made his debut only in March this year. Yet, he was considered as one of the senior Indian players on the SL Tour. He justified his selection with a Man of the Series performance in the ODI series.
When it comes to T20 cricket, SKY has been in top form in IPL. In each of the last three seasons, he has scored more than 400 runs for Mumbai Indians. He started well in his T20I career with two 30+ scores in just three games. Actually, he did not get a chance to bat in his debut encounter. With Team India also needing an aggressor during the middle-overs, SKY is one of the Indian players from the SL Tour who might get into the World T20 squad.
2) Prithvi Shaw
Although he is yet to make his T20I debut, it would not be a surprise if Prithvi Shaw is one of the Indian players from the SL Tour who might get into the World T20 squad. His form in IPL and domestic cricket is one of the reasons for this.
Shaw has been excelling in providing quick starts irrespective of the format of the game. His technique now looks settled, and it seems Shaw is also in a good mental space. If Team India decides to use KL Rahul in the middle-order, Shaw will have a realistic chance of making it to the World T20 as a reserve opener.
3) Ishan Kishan
Ishan Kishan has started both his T20I and ODI career with aggressive fifties. In the process, he has added to his popularity as a fearless striker of the ball. He is one of the wicket-keepers who will be in contention to represent India at the World T20.
Kishan’s versatility makes him an attractive selection for management. Primarily an opener, the Jharkand man can play at No.3 and below, as well. He scored over 500 runs in IPL 2020 and showed that he can be at his best against quality bowlers. Hence, he does have a decent chance of being in India’s World T20 squad.
4) Varun Chakravarthy
Varun Chakravarthy picked 17 wickets at an average of 20 and an economy of 6.85 in IPL 2020. A mystery spinner, Varun is a difficult bowler for the batsmen to read. He has improved his fitness and looks set for a stint at the World T20.
Unlike the other Indian spinners, Varun brings variety and unpredictability to his bowling. He is known to both contain runs and pick wickets at the same time. In fact, it can also be a decent strategy to try him at the death. Therefore, he is one of the contenders in the SL Tour contingent who could make it to World T20.
5) Deepak Chahar
Deepak Chahar has already taken eight wickets in the first phase of IPL 2021, thereby breaking away from a brief slump in IPL 2020. The record holder for India’s best individual T20I figures (6 wickets for 7 runs), Chahar also impressed with the bat in the recent ODI series against Sri Lanka.
Although his potential in the powerplay is known, Deepak must prove his potential at the death to make a case for his inclusion. Else, he is very similar to Bhuvneshwar Kumar in terms of attributes, and the selectors could go with other options.
