With the ODI World Cup happening in India, IPL franchises would use the tournament to improve their teams for the next season. There is news that IPL 2024 Auctions will happen in December. Before that, teams will have to release some of their players. This decision could be based on the performances of these cricketers in the World Cup. Here, we take a look at the list of five flops in the 2023 ODI World Cup who could be released before IPL 2024 Auctions.
1) Sam Curran
Sam Curran is one of the flops in the 2023 ODI World Cup who could be released before IPL 2024 Auctions. The Englishman became the most expensive player in the history of IPL in the last auction. However, he could not reply with a positive campaign.
Nevertheless, considering his age, Punjab might have considered retaining him. But, his show in the World Cup might cast doubts on his performances in Indian conditions. Therefore, it may not be a surprise if PBKS releases him and tries to get him back for a smaller fee.
2) Joe Root
Joe Root is an excellent player of spin, and he himself bowls decent spin. Considering these factors, he was expected to do well for England. However, he has been a disappointment. The English No.3 has failed to contribute well for his side in the campaign.
Rajasthan hired Root at the last moment in the previous auction. They might not think much before releasing him, especially because of his recent form.
3) Shakib Al Hasan
Shakib Al Hasan is also one of the flops in the 2023 ODI World Cup who could be released before IPL 2024 Auctions. He has not had a memorable campaign in the 2023 ODI World Cup. A World Cup legend, playing in suitable conditions, Shakib has neither hit form with the bat nor the ball.
This might directly have an impact on his IPL career, which is already on the downward spiral. Unless he surprises many with his performances in the next weeks, he might struggle to retain his contract.
4) Mustafizur Rahman
After the initial success, Mustafizur has failed to maintain his consistency in the IPL. However, he is still getting contracts due to the ability he has. Last season, he played for the Delhi Capitals and yet again, he was not able to pull off a memorable campaign.
Now that his World Cup performance is also not great, DC might release the cricketer. There are plenty of fresh options available on the market and DC might focus on them.
5) Fazalhaq Farooqi
Fazalhaq Farooqi is also a part of this list of flops in the 2023 ODI World Cup who could be released before IPL 2024 Auctions. Marco Jansen has been in brilliant form as an all-rounder in the World Cup. This could have an adverse impact on Farooqi’s time at SRH.
The franchise might try some different options and hence, they could release the Afghan. However, they could still be suitors for him at the auctions if he puts up a few solid performances in the next weeks.
