4 times WWE World Championship was defended in TLC main event

Tables, Ladders, and Chairs (TLC) has been one of the marquee pay-per-view events of WWE. Many fans have fond memories of watching their favourite Superstars switch to Extreme Mode and destroy each other using these three weapons.

Whenever one talks about TLC pay-per-view event, the pictures which come to the mind are Roman Reigns destroying his boss Triple H after losing to Sheamus, James Ellsworth costing Dean Ambrose the WWE Championship match, the entire RAW roster beating Baron Corbin, Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair, and Asuka tearing themselves apart for the SmackDown Women’s Championship, and many others.

Another famous match that headlined the TLC event was The Shield reunion match. Initially, Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose, and Seth Rollins were scheduled to take on the team of Sheamus, Cesaro, The Miz, Kane, and Braun Strowman. However, Kurt Angle replaced Roman at the last moment. At the very same edition of the PPV, there was an instant classic match between AJ Styles and Finn Balor.

It goes without saying that TLC is one of the most popular PPVs among the WWE Universe. In this article, we will list down those four instances when the WWE World title was put on the line at this event.

CM Punk vs Alberto Del Rio vs The Miz – WWE TLC 2011

The first time WWE booked a world title match as the main event of WWE TLC was back in 2011. It was the third edition of this pay-per-view and the 1st Mariner Arena played host to this event. After some hard-hitting bouts featuring Triple H, Kevin Nash, Sheamus, Jack Swagger, Cody Rhodes, Booker T, and other Superstars, CM Punk came out to defend his world title.

Tables, Ladders, and Chairs were allowed under the rules and the trio had a match which lasted for 18 minutes and 22 seconds. Ricardo Rodriguez assisted Alberto Del Rio in the match, but Punk executed a GTS on The Miz in the closing moments. He later climbed the ladder and unhooked his championship.

Randy Orton vs John Cena – WWE 2013

The Toyota Center in Texas hosted this mega match-up between Randy Orton and John Cena. The special thing about this match was that the WWE Title and the World Heavyweight Belt were unified after the match.

The winner had to unhook both the championships to emerge victoriously. In an entertaining match that lasted approximately 25 minutes, Randy Orton beat the Leader of Cenation and took both titles home.

Roman Reigns vs Sheamus – WWE 2015

As mentioned ahead, Roman Reigns destroying Triple H at TLC is considered one of the best moments in the pay-per-view’s history. The reason behind it is that four months later, HHH faced off The Big Dog in the main event of WrestleMania 32.

Sheamus held the WWE title and he played the role of a transitional champion. The Irish Superstar retained the gold after a contest which lasted for 23 minutes. However, he could not keep hold of the title for long as Reigns captured it the following night on RAW.

AJ Styles vs Dean Ambrose – 2016

WWE TLC has taken place every year. However, the WWE Championship has not been defended in the main event since 2016. AJ Styles and Dean Ambrose headlined TLC 2016 after an enthralling Survivor Series battle against RAW.

James Ellsworth proved to be the decisive man in this match as he costed Dean Ambrose the world title. In the last two years, WWE Female Superstars have main event TLC. However, this year, the chances of that happening look slim. Roman Reigns vs Kevin Owens or Braun Strowman vs Drew McIntyre will likely close this year’s TLC.
