India has had a decent record in the history of ICC limited-overs tournaments. Although the team has been underwhelming in recent years, the men in blue still have a couple of World Cups and a few Champions Trophies in the cabinet. There have been some players who have consistently stepped up for the team in these competitions. In this article, we take a look at the list of four Indians with the most M.O.M awards in ICC limited-overs tournaments so far.
4) Virat Kohli – 8
ODI World Cup – 2 || Champions Trophy – 1 || T20 World Cup – 5
Virat Kohli has not had luck with ICC trophies, but he still has done well in the tournaments. The current Indian captain has a total of eight M.O.M awards in ICC limited-overs tournaments. Five of those happen to be in the T20 World Cups. In the 2012 and 2016 editions, he earned two awards each while he won one in 2014.
It was in the 2009 Champions Trophy that Virat won his first M.O.M award in an ICC event. He did well in the 2011 World Cup but did not win the honour. In the 2015 and 2019 editions, he was the Player of the Match against Pakistan and West Indies respectively.
3) Rohit Sharma – 8
ODI World Cup – 5 || Champions Trophy – 1 || T20 World Cup – 2
It is Rohit Sharma who has done well for India in ICC’s limited-overs tournaments of recent years. He won a M.O.M award in the 2007 T20 World Cup and then one more in the ongoing T20 World Cup campaign against Afghanistan. The Mumbai player was India’s Player of the Match against Bangladesh in the 2017 Champions Trophy.
The rest of Rohit’s awards have come at the 50-over World Cups. While he won four trophies in the 2019 edition, he was also the Man of the Match against Bangladesh in the 2015 World Cup that was held in Australia.
2) Yuvraj Singh – 9
ODI World Cup – 4 || Champions Trophy – 2 || T20 World Cup – 3
Yuvraj Singh is also one of the Indians with the most M.O.M awards in ICC limited-overs tournaments so far. The Punjab all-rounder won nine such awards in his career.
Yuvi’s first was as a youngster back in 2000 in the Champions Trophy. He scored 84 runs against Australia and was declared the M.O.M. It took seven more years for the player to win another Player of the Match award in an ICC event. It was in the game against England in the 2007 T20 World Cup in which he struck six consecutive sixes in an over. In the immediate match against Australia, too, Yuvi won the M.O.M award. Of course, in the 2011 World Cup, he won four awards apart from the Player of the Series honour.
1) Sachin Tendulkar – 10
ODI World Cup – 9 || Champions Trophy – 1
Sachin Tendulkar leads this list of Indians with the most M.O.M awards in ICC limited-overs tournaments. The Master Blaster never played in any T20 World Cups, and hence, his M.O.M awards were only in the 50-over competitions.
Out of this, he earned only one Player of the Match award in the Champions Trophy. That was way back in 1998 when he scored a brilliant 141 against Australia in Dhaka. In the same encounter, he also collected four wickets. Hence, he was deservedly given the M.O.M award. The rest of Sachin’s achievements in the ICC tournaments have been in the World Cups. With nine awards, Sachin leads the list in the history of the competition, as well. The next best is Glenn McGrath with six awards.
