As per reports, Rahul Dravid will not re-apply for the position of India’s Head Coach. This means that India will have a new coach after the upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup. It is an important appointment because this coach will have his contract until the 2027 T20 World Cup. On that note, here, we take a look at the list of three current IPL coaches who can apply for the position of India’s Head Coach.
1) Andy Flower
Currently, the Head Coach of RCB, Andy Flower would be the ideal choice to become the Head Coach of Team India. He has plenty of experience in this role at the international level and has several trophies to his name, as well.
Flower will bring a fresh perspective to the Indian dressing room. Off late, India has been a bit subdued in their approach. This is something that needs correction to match the demands of the modern era. Flower would be the right person for this transition.
2) Ricky Ponting
Ricky Ponting is one of the current IPL coaches who can apply for the position of India’s Head Coach. If there is an ideal appointment for BCCI, it would be that of Ricky Ponting. However, the former Aussie skipper has many contracts across the globe and it could be hard to convince him to take up the India job.
India Team now needs top mentality to go on and win trophies. It is not that they do not have it now. It is just that the cutting edge is missing. A candidate like Ricky Ponting is known for his ruthless mentality and his trophy record is a proof of the same. Therefore, he is the perfect choice for India and even Ponting might be interested in the biggest coaching job in the cricketing world at the moment.
3) Shane Bond
The former Kiwi pacer is currently the assistant and the bowling coach of Rajasthan Royals. He would be an under-rated option for BCCI to consider.
Bond has done well in his coaching gigs in various other tournaments. He seems to have got some fresh ideas and a unique approach in the current era. Therefore, his appointment could be a possibility for the Indian Team.
4) Ashish Nehra
Ashish Nehra is also one of the is one of the current IPL coaches who can apply for the position of India’s Head Coach. It will be interesting to see if BCCI adopts a split-coaching model for the upcoming cycle. It will also be a good choice because India’s usual mistake of mixing up formats may not repeat.
In that case, Ashish Nehra would be the right person to take up the job for the T20 format or even the ODI format. He has already proven himself as a good coach in the IPL. India Head Coach role is a big challenge and Ashish has the credentials to take it up.
