3 surprising options New Zealand can consider as their next T20I captain

New Zealand has to now take a different route if they have to start dominating in the T20I format. The early exit from the 2024 T20 World Cup is a big wake-up call for the Kiwis. Kane Williamson may have to be replaced as the skipper. While Mitchell Santner is likely to take over, there are some other options the management should consider. Here, we take a look at the list of three surprising options New Zealand can consider as their next T20I captain.

1) Lockie Ferguson

Lockie Ferguson is already seen as one of the captaincy candidates for New Zealand. He has done the job as a stand-in captain on a couple of occassions.

It might be risky to appoint a pacer as a skipper. However, New Zealand may not have a lot of other choices. Lockie is an important part of the T20I setup and more responsibility could make him a better bowler.

2) Glenn Phillips

Glenn Phillips is one of the surprising options New Zealand can consider as their next T20I captain. Phillips is an important part of the T20I setup for New Zealand. Going forward, it is around him that the middle-order has to be constructed.

Considering he can keep wickets and can also bowl spin, it is a long way before New Zealand drops him if he is out of form. Therefore, since his place his secure, he can be a good choice as the skipper to lead the other players.

3) Devon Conway

Conway has already got experience in the T20 format. Age-wise, as well, he is one of the senior members of the squad. Therefore, he can be a good fit here.

Conway has a calm head on his shoulders and can do the job. Of course, he will need time to adapt to the requirements but Conway is perfectly capable of pulling it off.
