3 popular stars who could go unsold in IPL 2023 Auctions

IPL 2023 Auctions will happen in Kochi on December 23rd. In recent seasons, franchises have become shrewd when it comes to picking players at the auction. If the player does not fit the requirement, despite the reputation, teams may not consider the cricketer. We could see this happen at the upcoming auctions, too. Here, we take a look at three popular stars who could go unsold in IPL 2023 Auctions.

1) Kane Williamson

The former Sunrisers Hyderabad skipper had a disastrous campaign in IPL 2022. Since then, he has failed to fire in T20Is for New Zealand, too. Moreover, his price is INR 2 Cr and teams could be sceptical of using their purse for Kane.

Nevertheless, the Kiwi is a proven candidate in the IPL and would still be a demand. This will form a crucial subplot at the auctions.

2) Joe Root

Joe Root is one of the popular stars who could go unsold in IPL 2023 Auctions. The former English skipper is not even part of the England T20 squad and trusting him in the IPL would be a bold move for any franchise. He can bat only in the top order while his spin bowling may not be useful on all venues.

On the hind side, it would be highly unlikely for Root to enrol in the auctions if he has not got an assurance from any franchise. Therefore, it will be interesting to see if any team would hire the player at the auctions.

3) Ajinkya Rahane

Ajinkya Rahane played for Kolkata Knight Riders last season. Unfortunately, he could not deliver for the franchise and later had to be dropped. He was released and although he is having a decent domestic season, landing an IPL contract for the next auctions could be an issue.

Rahane is limited in his T20 game. Barring his value in the powerplay, it is hard to rely on him in other stages. With many youngsters also stepping, it would be hard for any team to invest in him, although his base price is just INR 50L.
