It was always going to be a risky move for Punjab Kings to have Shikhar Dhawan at the helm. It was mainly due to his age and batting form. However, in IPL 2023, he proved to be a failed move because of his captaincy. PBKS would want to change it for the next seasons. Here, we take a look at three players who can replace Shikhar Dhawan as the captain of the Punjab Kings for IPL 2024.
1) Jonny Bairstow
The English batter was absent for PBKS in IPL 2023. Considering the overall roster, he is the best T20 player available for PBKS. He is also fairly experienced and hence, he can get the nod.
Bairstow has led a few teams in the past. Hence, it won’t be an entirely risky move. With the team built around him, the fortunes could change for the squad.
2) Liam Livingstone
Liam Livingstone is one of the players who can replace Shikhar Dhawan as the captain of the Punjab Kings for IPL 2024. Another English big-hitter, Livingstone is also a decent choice for PBKS as the skipper.
He has not had a lot of experience in this regard but considering his role in the team, he might serve well as a skipper. It could be a risky decision but such calls need to be made in a logical sense for PBKS to move ahead.
3) Sam Curran
When Shikhar Dhawan was absent in IPL 2023, it was Sam Curran who led the team. He was not bad in his role and hence, he would be the most likely choice for the franchise.
However, it needs to be noted that Sam’s bowling form was not great this season. He has a hefty price-tag and PBKS could consider releasing him. If they do release him and get him back at a lower price, building the team around the youngster may not be a bad choice.
