One of the most successful international captains at the moment, Kane Williamson is struggling with the job in the ongoing IPL 2022. Apart from the team’s inconsistent performances, Kane’s batting form is also declining. In 11 games, the Kiwi has managed just 199 runs and that too, at a poor strike rate of 96. Hence, with the likes of Glenn Phillips on the bench, it might not be a surprise if Kane steps down for a game or two. That has happened in the past in IPL. However, Sunrisers Hyderabad will then have a problem in deciding on its captain. In this article, we take a look at three players who can replace Kane Williamson as the captain if he steps down from the role in IPL 2022.
1) Nicholas Pooran
Nicholas Pooran was recently appointed as the skipper of West Indies in limited-overs cricket. The youngster has done the job before for his country and of course, he is not new to captaincy in franchise cricket.
If SRH is looking at an option for the future, Pooran might not be a bad idea. Compared to his stint at Punjab Kings, Pooran is doing better with the bat for SRH. Moreover, he anyways has captaincy experience and might be considered for the role.
2) Bhuvneshwar Kumar
Bhuvneshwar Kumar is one of the players who can replace Kane Williamson as the captain if he steps down from the role in IPL 2022. The right-arm pacer has done the job before for SRH. He has led them for six games and the team won two out of those matches.
With Bhuvi finding form, it might not be a bad idea to give him the captaincy. He knows the franchise in and out and is a respected figure in the team. Hence, he will surely be one of the frontrunners if Kane had to drop himself or resign.
3) Rahul Tripathi
Rahul Tripathi does not have too much captaincy experience at the highest level. However, on the field, the right-hand batter is very animated and is often seen giving his inputs to the captain.
SRH has used a foreign skipper in recent years. This strategy is always vulnerable. Although Tripathi is still an uncapped player, he is quite experienced in the tournament. It is a distant idea but SRH should consider the Maharashtra man for the role.
