England had a terrible outing in the 2023 ODI World Cup. While many expected them to win the tournament, England finished below the likes of Afghanistan after the end of the league stage. There would be a lot of discussions on how to take this team to the top again. Further, there will also be a review of the performances of the players. On that note, here, we take a look at the list of three players England did not use well in the 2023 ODI World Cup.
1) Sam Curran
Barring the first few games, Sam Curran did not get to play a lot in the 2023 ODI World Cup. Reece Topley and David Willey went past him as the preferred option for the left-arm seamer. It needs to be noted that just a year ago, Sam was the Player of the Tournament in the 2022 T20 World Cup.
Sam, in recent months, has developed variations at the death. That is his expertise mostly. Also, as a batter, he has begun to do well as a constructor. Both these aspects were not used well by England in the World Cup.
2) Gus Atkinson
Gus Atkinson is one of the players England did not use well in the 2023 ODI World Cup. There was a lot of attention when England picked a new player out of the blue for the World Cup.
However, despite the likes of Mark Wood and Chris Woakes not firing, Atkinson did not get his chance. A new cricketer, Atkinson deserved a longer rope and usage as per his strengths. Both did not happen at the event.
3) Harry Brook
After the initial blip, Harry Brook actually came out good in the World Cup. However, he was dropped after Ben Stokes came back to the side.
Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root were both inconsistent. Their roles require playing pace and Brook is good at it. May be, a different usage of him could have had a better impact on the team.
