3 captains in the 2023 ODI World Cup who could be dropped for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy

The conclusion of the 2023 ODI World Cup will kickstart a new era for most of the teams. Let alone changing the captains, a few teams could go further ahead and even drop the captains from the squad if they are not suited to the combination. The 2025 ICC Champions Trophy will happen in Pakistan. On that note, here, we take a look at three captains in the 2023 ODI World Cup who could be dropped for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.

1) Temba Bavuma

Temba Bavuma gained some form before the 2023 ODI World Cup. However, during the event, he is yet to do well. In his absence, Reeza Hendricks performed well but later, he had to give up his place again for Bavuma.

Now that Bavuma is also the Test captain, South Africa might consider restricting him only to this format. There are plenty of talented youngsters in South Africa waiting for an opportunity. Someone like Dewald Brevis could be picked straightaway as an opener.

2) Dasun Shanaka (If Sri Lanka qualifies)

Dasun Shanaka is one of the captains in the 2023 ODI World Cup who could be dropped for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. The all-rounder had to miss almost half of the tournament due to a thigh injury.

Shanaka has not been in good form in recent months. There were reports that he would give up captaincy before the event. Now, Kusal Mendis might replace him altogether and Shanaka might find a challenge in retaining his place in the side.

3) Shakib Al Hasan (If Bangladesh qualifies)

More than “dropped”, it could be said that Shakib Al Hasan might himself retire after the 2023 ODI World Cup. It would be a big loss for the Bangladesh side.

The all-rounder has failed to do justice to his talent and expectations in the 2023 ODI World Cup. The management might look forward to grooming a new all-rounder.
