South Africa is one squad that has been underwhelming in the ICC tournaments. However, they have a strong setup right now and are surely one of the teams that cannot be taken lightly. With most players operating frequently in the IPL, conditions will not be a problem and hence, they can do well. It will be interesting to see the squad that will be selected. On that note, here, we take a look at two players who might shockingly miss the South Africa squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup.
1) Wayne Parnell
South Africa can afford only one of Marco Jansen and Wayne Parnell for the 2023 ODI World Cup. Although Parnell comes in with experience, for the ODI format, Jansen might be a better fit, especially because he can move the ball longer.
In India, lower-order batting can be crucial. Although both Parnell and Jansen almost have the same batting abilities, it is Jansen who is doing better right now with the willow. The rest of the pace attack could include Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje and Lungi Ngidi or Gerald Coetzee.
2) Tristan Stubbs
Tristan Stubbs is one of the players who might shockingly miss the South Africa squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup. The 22-year-old is one of the best young talents in the game right now. However, he could miss out on the World Cup. This is mainly due to his personal form and the emergence of Heinrich Klaasen.
The Proteas do not need a backup keeper because Quinton de Kock and Klaasen will do the job. In the middle-order, the likes of Aiden Markram, David Miller and Rassie van der Dussen will do the job. Klaasen will be a better fit here, considering his ability against spin bowling. His current form is also excellent. South Africa might rather prefer an extra spin-bowling all-rounder than a pure batter. Hence, Stubbs could miss out.
