In the careers of England and Australia’s cricketers, the Ashes tournament is an important one. This competition is the biggest event, especially for those who play the Test format. Therefore, they will look to do well in this tournament and they might even plan their careers around it. The next Ashes will be almost two years later. Therefore, a few players could decide to call it quits after the ongoing edition. Here, we take a look at two players who might retire after the ongoing Ashes 2023.
1) James Anderson
James Anderson, in the first two matches of Ashes 2023, could not make an impact. It is likely that he would be replaced by someone like Chris Woakes for the third game. In this regard, considering his poor form, his age and the future of the England Test Team, Anderson could think about retiring from the game.
He has set records which are almost impossible for many new-generation pacers to break. England is building a strong Test Team and there is scope for fresh blood to be a part of it. Since Anderson himself is not in great form, there is a chance that he could retire from international cricket after the conclusion of Ashes 2023.
2) Moeen Ali
Moeen Ali is one of the players who might retire after the ongoing Ashes 2023. Moeen had already retired from the format and it is only after Jack Leach was ruled out that he came back from retirement to play Ashes 2023.
However, it is unlikely that he would continue playing the format. Moeen has lucrative assignments in T20 leagues and he would want to prolong his career there. Anyways, his form in the first Test was not great and he was ruled out of the second Test due to an injury. England must look at someone like Will Jacks for the future and hence, Moeen might retire from the format.
