2 players MS Dhoni might groom as next captain for Chennai Super Kings

It has been confirmed that MS Dhoni will lead Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2023. However, the next season could be his last. MS Dhoni is likely to continue his association with CSK and hence, he would also be planning for the future of the franchise. With Ravindra Jadeja, the captaincy transition did not happen as expected. To avoid the same mistake, the team could decide on the next skipper with MS Dhoni grooming the candidate in IPL 2023. On that note, here, we take a look at two players MS Dhoni might groom as the next captain for Chennai Super Kings.

1) Ruturaj Gaikwad

Looking at the squad of CSK, and considering someone is needed for the long-term, Ruturaj Gaikwad seems to be the best option for CSK. The Maharashtra cricketer has a decent amount of experience in captaincy in domestic cricket.

IPL is a different ball game, though. Ruturaj needs to work on a lot of skills and it would be best if he is made aware of his responsibility well in advance. MS Dhoni will be a part of the franchise in the backroom and this will further benefit the youngster. Before that, Ruturaj will further want to improve his batting skills.

2) Moeen Ali

Moeen Ali is one of the players MS Dhoni might groom as the next captain for Chennai Super Kings. The English all-rounder is 35 years old right now. The likes of Faf du Plessis and Shikhar Dhawan have become a captain at an even older age.

If Ruturaj needs some more time, Moeen can come in as the stop-gap solution. The all-rounder is a ready product for leadership. At Chepauk, he would add value as a cricketer. Hence, there is no doubt about his place in the XI. He has a lot of captaincy experience. Hence, he is an option the franchise can consider.
