A playing XI can have only four foreigners in IPL. In the past, as well, we have seen many prominent foreign players miss out on chances in a season. This is mainly due to the combination that the franchises want to field. In IPL 2023, as well, we are seeing many instances of the same. On that note, here, we take a look at two overseas players who deserved more matches in IPL 2023.
1) Mitchell Santner – Chennai Super Kings
The Kiwi all-rounder started the season for CSK. While it was expected that he would drop out after Maheesh Theekshana would be available, despite the Sri Lankan spinner being out of form, CSK is yet to give a game to Santner after Theekshana arrived.
This also has to do with Ravindra Jadeja’s form. The Indian all-rounder is in good form with the ball. Since Santner also offers the same type of bowling, it does not make sense to have two same spinners, especially with one being a foreigner. That said, Santner is a top T20 cricketer and he might have just made a difference if he played a few more games.
2) Quinton de Kock – Lucknow Super Giants
Quinton de Kock is one of the overseas players who deserved more matches in IPL 2023. It is down to the form of Kyle Mayers that QDK has not played a lot so far. Nevertheless, after KL Rahul was ruled out of the season, QDK has taken his position at the top of the order.
While Mayers has done well and it would be unfair to drop him, it needs to be noted that QDK is a more experienced cricketer. As seen in his first game for LSG this season, he may not take long to get going. This could have even helped them win a few games where they had a batting collapse.
