2 Instances CSK Finished At The Top In IPL Points Table

After defeating the Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Friday night, the Chennai Super Kings have attained the number one position in the IPL Points Table of the 2021 season. The Chennai-based franchise currently has 14 points to its name, with seven wins and two defeats in nine matches.

Looking at the way the Chennai Super Kings performed in the recent matches against the Mumbai Indians and the Royal Challengers Bangalore, it seems like CSK can top the IPL Points Table this year. The MS Dhoni-led outfit is in splendid form. But the fans should note that this is not the first time CSK will top the standings if they manage to do the same. They have done it twice before, and in this article today, we will look back at those two instances.

1. CSK Topped IPL Points Table in 2015

The last time the Chennai Super Kings finished at the helm of the IPL Points Table was during the 2015 season. Playing under the leadership of the one and only Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the Super Kings won nine of their 14 league matches and registered five defeats. Their net run rate after the league stage was +0.709.

The Chennai Super Kings had started their IPL 2015 campaign with a 1-run victory against the Delhi Capitals. Their five losses in the league stage came against Rajasthan Royals, Kolkata Knight Riders, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals. Although they topped the IPL Points Table, the Chennai-based franchise could not win the trophy as they lost to MI in the final.

2. CSK topped the standings in 2013

The Chennai Super Kings had won the Indian Premier League trophy in 2010 and 2011. However, the first time they finished at number one position in the standings was during the 2013 edition of the Indian Premier League. Again, the captain of the team was Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

It was a 9-team tournament and the Super Kings finished number one after registering 11 wins in 16 matches. Their net run rate was +0.530. They had started the season with a defeat against MI, but still topped the standings. Their other losses had come against Pune Warriors, Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bangalore.
