2 Indians you might not know were on the standby list for the ODI World Cup 2019

It is now common practice for teams to name a standby list for any major tournament. It is required in case of a sudden emergency. India had named five players on the standby list for the 2019 ODI World Cup. Ambati Rayudu, Rishabh Pant and Axar Patel were three names. These players were active at around that time and hence, it does not come as a surprise now. However, two names are interesting when you now look back. On that note, here, we take a look at two Indians you might not know were on the standby list for the ODI World Cup 2019.

1) Ishant Sharma

Ishant Sharma is a legend when it comes to Test Cricket. However, he could not have a long career in the shorter formats. Many expected him to crack the ODI format but it did not happen.

Nevertheless, thanks to his experience and his competency in English conditions, Ishant Sharma was in the picture when it came to the 2019 ODI WC. Hence, he was a part of the standby list. He did not travel but was told to be ready if the need arises.

2) Navdeep Saini

Navdeep Saini is one of the Indians you might not know were on the standby list for the ODI World Cup 2019. Saini has been in a similar role for a few years now. Interestingly, he had a similar role at the time when his career started.

Saini has the attributes that India desperately needs at the moment. He is quick, can hit the deck and is tall. However, Saini does not have great control. The Delhi cricketer does have potential and hence, India is still investing in him. Therefore, it was not a surprise when he was on the standby list for the World Cup. It might not be a surprise if he has a similar role for the 2023 edition, too.
